Ph.D. is an abbreviation for Doctor of Philosophy or Philosophiae Doctor (Latin). It is a type of doctorate degree awarded by universities. It is often a requirement for getting the job as a university professor, innovator or researcher. In India, most of the states have their own higher educational system that offers the degree. Assam is one of the seven sisters’ states having a literacy rate of 73.18%. There are several higher education institutions in the state offering research projects in various streams.

Applicant requires minimum 55% marks in aggregate (50% for SC/ST/BC//PHC) in master's degree. Students in last semester of their masters can also apply. Universities take an entrance exam and interview to select the deserving candidates. Applicants also need valid scores in JRF conducted by UGC NET, CSIR NET or GATE. Some institutes also organise a Pre-Ph.D. course before actual beginning of the course.

One should be maximum 28 years of age for applying for JRF in UGC conducted exams. If a candidate applies directly without JRF then there is no age limit prescribed by the universities.

Application can be done online through universities' web portals. The web page opens 3-4 months prior to commencement of actual session. All information regarding entrance date is available online only.

Online application form requires applicant's personal and educational information in first step of the form. Application fee can be submitted through net-banking or bank e-challan. A print of the form should be saved after final submission.
